Richard H. Moore Jr.

Richard “Dick” Moore, Jr., went home to his Lord and Savior on Thursday, March 28, 2019 at Meadowlark Scenic (former Autumn Hills) in Manhattan, KS. Born in Elkhart, Indiana on December 4, 1930, he was the son of the late Richard H. and Helen Lehman Moore. Upon graduating from Elkhart High School as part of the class of ’48, he joined his parents in the family business Moore’s Brake Service at 2692 S. Main Street. In 1947, Dick joined the Indiana Army National Guard in his hometown and served his country and community faithfully for over 38 years.

Dick made many life-long friends during his years of service and served his country admirably with a tour in Korea and a tour in Vietnam. Dick served in many capacities over his thirty-eight years from a private in the infantry, working his way through the ranks and becoming an Artillery officer and retiring a Colonel. Among many awards, Dick received the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry (w/ Bronze Star), Combat Infantryman Badge, Bronze Star Medal, and the Army Parachute Badge. Retiring as a Colonel, he was a career Soldier in the Army, attending the Officer Embarkation Basic Course, the US Army Field Artillery Officer Advanced Course, and the Command & General Staff College.

On 10, February 1962, Dick married Sandra Tutorow at the Dunlap United Methodist Church in Elkhart, Indiana. They have three daughters - Daina Durham of Cleveland, Georgia, Catherine Cherry of Marietta, Georgia and Wendy Sadler of Franklin, Tennessee.  Colonel Lee and Daina Durham have three children - Sgt. Carson Durham and Alexis Durham and 1 Lt Miles Ball.  Kirk and Lieutenant Colonel Cathi Cherry have a daughter, Amelia. Dave and Wendy Sadler have four children: Melinda, Elianna, Isabella and Isaac.

As a loving husband and father, he adored his wife, three daughters, three son-in-laws, and eight grandchildren. He will be remembered for his dedication to his family and country.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 2nd, at the Yorgensen- Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home 1616 Poyntz, Manhattan, Kansas.

Reverend Jerald Turner will lead graveside services with full military honors at the Prairie Street Cemetery in Elkhart, Indiana at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 9th.  The Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home will handle all arrangements in Elkhart.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.  Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, KS 66502.
