"It is with great sadness that the family of Shonne Sue Durr (Slabaugh) announce her passing on Wednesday July 26, 2023 at Esther House-Center for Hospice Care, Elkhart. Shonne Sue was born on August 6, 1938 in Elkhart, IN to Howard and Allene Slabaugh. She was their only child and the apple of their eye and their joy.
Shonne attended Hawthorne Elementary, Roosevelt Jr. High and graduated from Elkhart High School in 1956. She was involved in various clubs in high school. She was a member of the Cheer block and was a charter member of Alpha Pi Chapter of Beta Chi Sorority. As a child and youth, she twirled the baton and played the flute in band.
After high school she worked at Whitehall Laboratories as a secretary. Shonne was a homemaker and spent a lot of time helping at Stacey's school being a Room Mother most every year. She loved to shop and bake and work out in her yard. She was a very good bowler, bowling on a league for many years with her mom.
Shonne went back to work in the late 70's doing secretarial work and seasonal work at EH Tepe
Co. She began working at Elkhart Central High School in the early 80's as the Guidance Secretary.
Shonne married Clyde Durr Jr. in 1988. Shonne was an avid Blazer fan going to most all basketball and football games. When her Granddaughter Allison began playing many sports, she tried not to miss a one, and there were many sports involved. She was such a wonderful loving Nana. Shonne retired from Elkhart Central in 2004. When her first Great granddaughter was born, she helped to take care of her 2 days a week for a couple of years. That was such a joy for her, she loved children. Shonne also volunteered on the Women's Hospital Auxiliary working in the Gift shop one day a week for several years and served as a member of the Salvation Army Woman's Auxiliary.
Shonne was a do-er. Always on the go, helping her mom that lived to 100 and her family. She loved to stay busy and worked in her gardens often. She had a green thumb and could grow most anything. She even enjoyed pulling weeds. Shonne also loved to travel, shop, and be outside, especially on the water boating. She had many dogs throughout her life and cared for them deeply. She attended Faith United Methodist Church with her husband Clyde where she was active in the church being a greeter and making peanut brittle for their sale before the holidays. She moved into Harmony of Elkhart Memory Care at the end of January this year and lived there until going to Esther's house this past weekend. Shonne will be deeply missed by her family and many others. She was a joy to all that knew her, and her smile and charm would light up a room. She is now smiling again and free from her disease of Alzheimer's and in her eternal home.
