CARL B. HAWKINS
Carl B. Hawkins, 90 of Elkhart, died at 5:23 pm November 4, 2010 at Elkhart General Hospital.
He was born October 19, 1920 in Troutville, Virginia to Carl L. and Vera V. (Owen) Hawkins and married Margery Louise Ax on April 30, 1946 in Indianapolis, IN. She survives with 2 sons, Carl B. (Deborah) Hawkins of Niles, MI and Robert D. Hawkins of Tucson, AZ; a daughter, Elaine (Joseph) Fiwek of Elkhart, 10 grandchildren, 1 great-grandson and a brother, Ansel (Carol) Hawkins of Newport News, VA. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Liola Moss and brother Bill Hawkins.
Carl received his Bachelor’s and Masters degrees from Purdue University and was a member of the Phi Delta Kappa Educational Fraternity. He was a teacher and administrator for 35 years at Roosevelt, Pierre Moran and Brookdale Junior High Schools where he coached football, basketball and track. He was the Elkhart City Parks Dept. Softball Commissioner and coached softball. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, secretary-treasurer of the Heart City Kiwanis Club, was on the board of the Railroad Museum, and a member of the Norfolk & Western Historical Society. He was an avid golfer and a train enthusiast. He served in the U.S. Army-Air Corps during World War II and retired as a Lt. Colonel from the US Air Force Reserves.
The family will receive friends from 4-7 pm Monday at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home at Cobblestone Crossing, Elkhart where services will be held at 1 pm Tuesday. Reverend Stephen Braden will officiate. Entombment will follow at Chapel of Memories Mausoleum, Rice Cemetery. Military honors will be rendered by the U.S. Air Force and the D.A.V. #19.
