Carl L. (Gooney) Wetzel, Jr., 88 of Bristol, passed away on April 6, 2016 at his home. He was born Dec. 17, 1927 in Shamokin, PA to Carl L. and Charrell L. (Reed) Wetzel, Sr.
He married Mary E. Nihart on June 14, 1953 in Bristol. She died on Nov. 24, 2010. Surviving are a daughter, Marcia (Ted) Williams and a son, Brian Wetzel (Sue Massey) both of Bristol; 3 grandchildren, Charrell (Justin) Stevens of Granger, Kimberly Williams of Bristol, Allison (Brice) Hartman of Granger, a great-granddaughter, Hazel Charlotte Hartman and 13 International exchange grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Mary Wall and Betty Crawford.
Carl graduated from Bristol High School in 1945 and served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He retired as a production worker from Kesko Products in Middlebury and after retirement became the groundskeeper for the church.
He was a member of Bristol United Methodist Church and enjoyed playing baseball. He was offered a try-out for the Cubs baseball organization.
Visitation will be Friday, April 8th from 2-4 & 6-8 pm at the Bristol United Methodist Church and an hour prior to services held on Saturday, April 9th at 10:30 am. Rev. Fred Stayton will officiate. Interment will follow at Oakridge Cemetery, Bristol where military honors will be provided by the U.S. Army and DAV #19.
Memorials may be given to the church.
