Catherine "Cathy" Jean Fortin

July 10, 1943 — June 8, 2016

The death of Catherine Jean (Baker) Fortin of Middlebury, Indiana and formerly of Saint John, New Brunswick, (South Bay) Canada, daughter of the late James Walker and Gerna Baker, occurred on June 8, 2016 at Hubbard Hill in Elkhart, Indiana. A 1965 graduate of the Saint John General Hospital School of Nursing, Cathy’s career took her to Richmond, Virginia, where she met her husband of 43 years Bruce A. Fortin.

A Master Gardener, Cathy was very active in the Michiana Master Gardeners Association. She was a masterful knitter, enjoyed gardening, wildlife, feeding her birds, skiing, and loved entertaining. Her warm and welcoming personality will be remembered by all who were lucky enough to dine at her table. Cathy brought extra enjoyment to every occasion. Her love for children was demonstrated by both her caring for the Cawood children for 18 years and her two grandchildren.

Besides her husband, Cathy is survived by her daughter Sara Fortin of Virginia Beach, VA; a son Paul (Alyson) Fortin of Middlebury and two grandchildren, Jenna and Drew Fortin, who were very fortunate to call her Nana. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Anne Baker of Canada, along with many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother Jim Baker.

Family and friends may gather at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home on June 12th from 2-6 pm for visitation. A funeral service will be held on June 13th at Hillcrest United Methodist Church at 11 am, where there will be an hour visitation prior to service.
