Clifton Dean Newton, age 87, of Elkhart, passed away Thursday, November 18, 2021 at Memorial Hospital, South Bend. Cliff was born July 16, 1934 in Vienna, IL to Elmer and Marie Newton. He married Janice M. Kidder on July 25, 1965 at Grace Brethren Church in Elkhart
After graduating high school, Cliff honorably served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. He was an electrician working for Slessman Electric and retired from Schwartz Electric in Wakarusa. He enjoyed being a bus driver for First Baptist Church for their bus ministries program. He volunteered at Wycliff Associates in Orlando, Florida doing electrical maintenance and in Papua New Guinea, where he did anything that was needed to assist the missionaries. He was a member of McCoy Memorial Baptist Church and served as a Trustee for the church. He enjoyed sports and supported the St. Louis Cardinals in baseball and Northridge and Concord High Schools in basketball. He was a hard worker and loved to repair things.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Jan, daughter, Shelley (Kurt) Silveus of Osceola; grandchildren Sierra (Matt) Greulich, Taylor Silveus and Gabe Silveus and a great-grandson Boston Robert Greulich; siblings, Sharon Thomas of IL, Joy Caplinger of Energy, IL, Jean Larrison Kerr of Mt. Vernon, IL, Susie (Floyd) Summers of Goreville, IL, Gayla Warren of Mt. Vernon, IL, Harry Newton of Elkhart, Ron Newton of Elkhart, David Newton of Wichita Falls, TX and Tom (Diana) Newton of Mt. Vernon, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Robert Newton and sister Anita Wright.
Friends may visit from 3-7 pm on Monday, November 22, 2021 at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, 1531 Cobblestone Blvd., Elkhart, IN 46514 Funeral services will be held at 10 am on Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at McCoy Memorial Baptist Church 134 St Clair Ave., Elkhart, IN 46514 with visitation one hour before service at the church. Rev. Ray Laborde will officiate. Burial will follow at Sugar Grove Cemetery in Goshen with military honors. Memorial donations may be made to McCoy Memorial Baptist Church.
