Cynthia S. O’Brien, 67, formally of Toledo, OH, passed away Sunday, June 22, 2014 at the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care in Elkhart surrounded by her loving family. Cindy dedicated her life to her family and her passion for education.
Cindy was born April 4, 1947 to Richard and Pamela (Gardner) Fangman in Toledo, OH. Cindy married John D. O’Brien on October 22, 1966 in Monroe, MI. Her parents preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband John; her two sons, Kirk (Rebecca) O’Brien of Elkhart, and Scott O’Brien of San Francisco, CA; grandsons, Dillon, Sean, Nicholas; brother, Mark (Diane) Fangman of Monroe, NC.
Cindy earned her Bachelor of Arts and her Masters degrees from the University of Toledo and an Associate of Allied Arts from Ohio State University. Her teaching career spanned 30 years enriching the lives of hundreds of students in Sylvania, OH, McAllen, TX, and Elkhart. She retired as a teacher from Elkhart Community Schools where she also served ten years as the administrator of the English as a Second Language (ESL) program. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Visitation for Cindy will be from 4-8pm Wednesday, June 25th at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, Elkhart and 4-8pm Thursday, June 26th at Walker Funeral Home, Toledo where services will be held at 11am Friday, June 27th. Burial will follow at Elliston Cemetery, Elliston, OH.
