Dennis Alan Gable, 72, of Elkhart passed away Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at Elkhart General Hospital after a short illness. Denny was a kind, generous, and loving man.
He was born on July 31, 1945 in Huntington, IN to Donald and Dorothy (Gurley) Gable. He married Judy Barnett on August 8, 1968. She survives along with two daughters, Kristine (Kurt) Weimer of Elkhart, Jennifer (Greg) Couch of Fishers, IN, and son, Matthew (Robyn) Gable of Elkhart; five grandchildren, Elizabeth, Benjamin, Zoe, Isaac and Brooke; brother, Norman (Laura) Gable, and sister Rita Gable, both of North Manchester, IN. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents and daughter Michelle Gable.
Dennis received his Bachelors and Masters degrees from Indiana State University. He started teaching in 1968 at the Elkhart Sophomore division then moved to Elkhart Central High School until he retired in 2016. Denny taught industrial technology (“shop”) and worked to keep the lessons up to date and relevant. He helped start the ElkLogics robotics team and would spend a great deal of his free time learning more about robots.
Denny was a constant educator. In addition to teaching at Central during the day, he taught electrical engineering courses for the Association of Builders and Contractors. He was an electrical inspector for the City of Elkhart, and would use this experience to help his students learn more about their trade.
He was the ideal dad and grandpa. He came to just about every event that the kids and grandkids had no matter how far the trip. He genuinely loved his family and taking walks with his many “grand-dogs.” He always found an excuse to spoil the family. Grandpa would not be caught outside without his “old man” hat. Dennis enjoyed traveling with his wife Judy, most recently to California and Nova Scotia.
He was incredibly generous to everyone he met, particularly with his time. He was always willing to lend a hand at any hour for any reason. His skills went far beyond being a teacher or electrician.
Friends may pay their respects Sunday, November 5, from 2-6pm at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home. There will be a 1 pm service on Monday, November 6 at the same location. Pastor Tim Sheets will officiate. Entombment will be at Rice Cemetery at a later date.
