Donald W. Singleton, 83, of Elkhart, died at 11:30 am, Saturday September 5, 2009 at his home.
He was born January 3, 1926 in Elkhart to Benjamin M. and Wilrose (Waldrof) Singleton and married Vera D. Kime on June 14, 1947 in Elkhart. She survives with 5 daughters, Linda (Daniel) Bodlovich of Hobart, IN, Marcia (Leo) Tracy of Avon, IN, Ruth (Steve) Kilmer, Debra Robinson and Brenda Singleton all of Elkhart; 7 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and a brother, Alfred J. Singleton of Elkhart. 5 brothers and 1 sister preceded in death.
Mr. Singleton retired as a machine operator after 30 years from Elkhart RubberWorks. He then worked for Sun Appliances and did custodial work for Dr. Krause and the Dunlap Methodist Church. He was a member of Dunlap United Methodist Church, a 50 year member of Kane Masonic Lodge #183, Charter member of Concord Volunteer Fire Dept. where he was first aid Captain for many years. He was a life member of the Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association. He was a first aid instructor for the American Red Cross and a licensed E.M.T. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed bowling and baseball. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II.
Friends may call from 2-4 & 6-8 pm Tuesday at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, 1531 Cobblestone Blvd. Elkhart where a Masonic memorial service will be held at 7:30 pm by Kane Masonic lodge. Friends may also call an hour prior to the 2 pm funeral Wednesday at Dunlap United Methodist Church, 23674 U.S. 33, Elkhart. Reverend Joe Smith will officiate. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens where military graveside honors will be rendered by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard and the D.A.V. # 19, Elkhart.
