Ernest H. Detwiler, 93 of Elkhart, entered Heaven’s gates on Sunday, Nov. 22nd at 8:30 pm. He had resided at Miller’s Merry Manor, Wakarusa for the past two years.
Mr. Detwiler was born on July 14, 1922 in Bristol to Henry and Stella (Fisher) Detwiler.
Living most of his life in Bristol, he worked at the United States Post Office in Bristol. Previous to that at Schult Mobile Homes in Elkhart and Middlebury. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in Germany from 1941-1945. While in Germany, he was a front line communications person.
On June 21, 1944, he married Kathryn Spigelmoyer. She pre-deceased him in 1978. In March, 1980, he married Ruth Housley in North Carolina. She died in 2010. Surviving is a daughter, Gena (Charles) Darling of Elkhart, two sons, Dr. Timothy (Sally) Detwiler of Grand Rapids, MI and Stephen (Darcia) Detwiler of Goshen; Step-son, Terry Housley of South Carolina; 6 grandchildren, Jeff (Michelle) Darling, Katy (Rich) Kline, Kyle Detwiler, Kurt Detwiler, Ryan (Keitha) Detwiler, Michelle Detwiler and step-granddaughters, Kim and Christine of South Carolina and a great-grandson, Kason Detwiler. Also surviving is a sister, Betty Zimmerle of Elkhart. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, Ruth Boyer and Gertrude Hackenberg and a brother, Billy Lou Detwiler.
Visitation will be from 10 am to 11 am Wednesday, Nov. 25th at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home where services will begin at 11 am. Dr. Dan Gelatt will officiate. Interment will follow at Zion Cemetery, Bristol with military honors.
