Fletcher H. Meeks, 84, of Bristol, died December 8, 2010 at 10:30 pm at Eastlake Nursing and Rehabilitation. He was born August 18, 1926 to Walter F. and Elsie (Robertson) Meeks in Walker County, AL. On June 30, 1962 he married Mary “Sue” Frisby in Elkhart.
Along with his wife Sue of Bristol, he is survived by 2 sons Joseph (Jeanette) Meeks of Bristol and Frank Meeks of Elkhart; a daughter Susie (Edward) Wade of Bristol; 4 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; a sister Nell (Ernest) Long of Venice, FL and half-sister Elaine Key of Nashville, TN. He was preceded in death by his father Walter in 1957, his mother Elsie in 1996, a son Gary Meeks in 2004, a brother Frank Meeks in 2000, and 2 sisters Donna Fae Meeks in 1936 and Flossie Banks in 1983.
Fletcher moved to the Elkhart area in 1950 and worked as superintendent for various manufacturers in the housing industry, including Skyline and Torch, until 1976. He then founded Oak Plantation, a furniture store in Shipshewana and was self-employed there until he retired in 1996. He served as Buck Sargeant in the US Army during World War II. Fletcher loved his family, enjoyed collecting antiques, was inventive and a free-thinker.
Friends may visit the family Monday from 2 to 6 pm at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home at Cobblestone Crossing, Elkhart where a funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 am. Father Bill Sullivan will officiate. Burial will follow at Shore Mennonite Cemetery.
