Helen Louise Cart

March 6, 1928 — June 13, 2016

Helen passed to her eternal home on Monday, June 13, 2016. She was born on March 6, 1928 to Wright E. Myers and L. Gladys (Swoverland) Myers. She married Richard J. Uplinger in 1956. They divorced in 1969. She married Howard C. Cart in 1978. He preceded her in death in 1997.

Helen leaves her legacy to her children Robert Galbraith, David (Janet) Marshall, Leigh (Bob) Stubblefield, Loretta (Jim Rea) Dickey, Richard (Jackie) Uplinger II, Ronald (Lori) Uplinger and also to her stepchildren Howard (Evelyn) Cart Jr. and Marsha (Kenneth) Fales. She will live on in the heart of her sisters-in-law, Doris L. Myers and Doris V. Myers, and Lucille Stephey. She was blessed with and loved her 20 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her feline companions LC and Sadie.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Leonard E. Myers and Leland B. Myers; husband, Howard; her closest friend, Richard Uplinger; stepson, Brian Cart; grandchild, Shannon Franks; and two great-grandchildren, Toby Qualls and Emily Marshall.

She was a homemaker most of her life, an avid camper, traveler, reader and loved to play Pinochle and Yahtzee. She was passionate about wildlife and animals and made sure they always had a place to eat at the Cart Café. She was a giver and gave all she could to others to make their lives better. She moved to Illinois in 1998 and became an active member of the Oasis Senior Center in Lincoln for several years, driving the bus for the Seniors to various different outings. She worked with Special Olympics, was a member of the Elkhart Order of the Moose, The Audubon Society, The National Wildlife Federation, and supported several other organizations including Smile Train, The Salvation Army, the Humane Shelter, and St. Labre Indian School. She was a 1946 graduate of Elkhart High School. Known for her integrity, she will be greatly missed, and forever dearly loved by her family.

Visitation will be at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home in Elkhart on Saturday June 18, 2016 from 10:00 am to 1:00pm. The Funeral will follow and burial will be in Olive Cemetery in Wakarusa.
