Helen M. Watts-Brown, 85 of Brentwood Retirement Center, Elkhart, passed away February 17, 2014 at Hubbard Hill Healthcare Center. She was born on December 11, 1928 in Delaware, OH to Charles and Elma (Milhone) Avery. She married Hilton Watts on June 10, 1951 in Bucyrus, OH. He preceded her in death on Sept. 1, 1991. She then married Curtis H. Brown on March 27, 2007 in Elkhart.
He survives, along with her three daughters; Sharry Phillips of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Becky Nystrand of South Bend, IN. and Carla (Doug) Randall of Wilmington, N.C.; one son, Gregg (Jeannine) Watts of Elkhart, IN.; eight grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, one sister, Nancy (Ben) Bird of Delaware, OH and two nephews, Jeff Bargdill and Scott Bargdill both of Delaware, OH.
Friends may call three hours prior to the 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22nd
funeral service at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home. Pastor Tom Thews will officiate. Burial will follow at Rice Cemetery, Elkhart.
Helen was a High School English, Speech and Home Economics teacher in Ohio for 6 years before moving to Elkhart where she taught for Elkhart Community Schools. She also played a crucial role in establishing TAPP in Elkhart Community Schools which is still thriving today. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Ohio Wesleyan and her master’s degree from Indiana University. She retired in 1994 after teaching for 41 years. She was a volunteer and board member for A.D.E.C and NILS, member of AAUW, Books and Breakfast Club, Altrusa, Delta Kappa Gamma, N.E.A., I.S.T.E.A., and the American Consumer Sciences Association.
