Herman Lee Thomas was born in Lafayette, Indiana on July 31, 1936. Living 81 years, he died on January 27, 2018.
He was a hard-working man that enjoyed family and the simple things like backyard cookouts, road trips to the beach and playing cards. He loved boating, watching sports, pick-up basketball and in his later years, delight in playing with his grand-kids.
He served in the United States Marine Corps following the Korean War from 1953 to 1956 as was commended and decorated in the rank of Corporal.
Herman was one of 5 boys to his father William R. “Jack” Thomas and Gertrude (Bell) Thomas. His brother Arthur is a resident of Indiana and he was preceded in death by Howard, James and Claude.
Herman has a son Mitchell Lee Thomas of Florida and a daughter Michelle Lee (Thomas) Blackman of Texas. Herman has two step-sons, Roger Sebastian and Ray Sebastian, both of Indiana. Herman has 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren with two more soon to arrive.
Herman owned a number of businesses and enterprises over his working career including a trucking fleet, farming, service stations and convenience stores. He continued working, driving a truck across the United States, well into his 70s.
He was an Eagle Scout and member for over 60-years of the American Legion and an over 50-year member of the Moose Lodge.
While dementia robbed him of his final 18 months, we know that he is in a better place where he is whole again in mind, body and spirit. And at this time we grieve his loss but will always be reminded to “Hammer down!”
A graveside service will be held at 11 am Tuesday, July 31st at the Veteran's Tower, Prairie Street Cemetery, Elkhart with military honors rendered by the U.S. Marine Corps Honor Guard and the D.A.V. #19.
