Ida L. Blessing, 87, of Elkhart, died Monday, November 30, 2009 at 6:45 am at home. She was born February 12, 1922 to Dewey and Alice (Seward) Smeltzer. She married Robert H. Blessing, Sr. on August 25, 1941 in Angola, IN.
He survives along with 3 sons Robert H. (Elizabeth) Blessing II, of Floyds Knobs, IN, Richard A. (Ann) Blessing of Clarksville, TN, and Ronald D. (Kathy) Blessing of Elkhart; 2 daughters Deborah J. (Donald) Oberloh of South Bend, and Denise L. (Bryan) Baughman of Niles, MI; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Dewey Smeltzer.
Mrs. Blessing graduated from Elkhart High School. She was a homemaker and during WWII worked for the aircraft industry. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, Goshen; was a life member and active in Delta Theta Chi sorority; Mr. & Mrs. Club; Elkhart Mineral Society; and was founder of the Junior Women’s League.
Visitation will be Thursday from 3-7 pm at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, 1531 Cobblestone Blvd., Elkhart, where funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 am. Rev. Larry Kurtz of Faith United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will follow at Rice Cemetery.
