Irvin J. “Irv” Polk, 74, of Elkhart, died Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at 4:30 am at Elkhart General Hospital. He was born on July 8, 1935 to the late Rev. Elmer R. and Erma I. (Wilson) Polk in Redkey, IN. On April 25, 1965 he married Sandra L. Eitel in Elkhart.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra L. Polk of Elkhart, a son Marshall (Fran) Simmons of Indianapolis; 2 granddaughters; and a sister Marceil (Paul) Gathany of Springfield, OH.
Mr. Polk graduated from Fairmount High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Taylor University in Upland, IN. He was the Boy’s Club Director for 46 years at Youth for Christ/Lifeline in downtown Elkhart, and was active on many boards and agencies that provided services for youth. He was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church and an honorary member of the Elkhart Morning Rotary Club. Irv enjoyed his 1973 Chevy Impala convertible and taking slide pictures. He was a US Army veteran.
Friends may call Sunday from 2-8 pm at the Youth for Christ/Lifeline Clubhouse, 174 State Street, Elkhart, and also 1 hour prior to the 1:30 pm funeral service Monday at Faith United Methodist Church, 22045 CR 18, Goshen. Rev. Larry Kurtz and Rev. Dr. Frank Beard, Kokomo District Superintendent will officiate. Burial will follow at Rice Cemetery, Elkhart. Military graveside honors will be rendered by the D.A.V. #19, Elkhart. In lieu of flowers, memorials are asked to be given to YFC/Lifeline of Elkhart County.
Parking for the visitation will be available at the top floor public parking garage by the police dept., Inova Federal Credit Union, and the NIBCO skating park lot. Shuttle services will be provided by YFC/Lifeline buses.
