J. Levon Byrd, 87 of Elkhart, passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at his home.
He was born August 13, 1925 in White Pigeon, Michigan to Lonnie and Willowdean (Ward) Byrd. He married Betty L. Shafer on July 2, 1947. Surviving are a son, Michael (Linda) Byrd of Shipshewana; 2 grandsons, Christopher (Linda) Byrd and Jeffrey (Jill) Byrd, and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty in 2006 and a daughter Marcia S. Byrd in 1958.
Levon retired from the Elkhart Public Utilities Co. and previously had worked at C.G. Conn’s for 25 years and at Vincent Bach. He served in the U.S. Army-Air Corps as an MP in World War II and was a former member and founder of the Elkhart Jaycees.
Visitation will be from 4-8 pm Tuesday at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, Elkhart where services will be held at 1 pm Wednesday. Reverend Linda Craig will officiate. Burial will follow at Rice Cemetery with military honors rendered by the U.S. Army Honor Guard and the DAV# 19.
