James D. Smith

James D. Smith, 89, of Elkhart, died at 12:28 am Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010 at Elkhart General Hospital. He was born Aug. 24, 1921 in Philadelphia, PA to Arthur and Annie (Hammond) Smith. On July 22, 1942 in Wilmington, DE, he married Pauline L. Smith who preceded him in death on Dec 1, 2005.

Surviving are a daughter-in-law and granddaughter; sister-in-law Eleanor Smith of Elkhart; nephews and nieces Lee and Barb Smith and Fred “Lyle” and Barb Smith all of Elkhart; Ed and Carolann Smith of Oak Ridge, TN; 5 great-nieces; 4 great-nephews; 3 great-great-nieces and 3 great-great-nephews. He was preceded in death by 2 sons Craig and Jay, and a brother and sister.

James retired as a Lieutenant from the Elkhart Police Department after 20 years and then retired from Miles Laboratories. He served in the US Marine Corps during WWII.

Friends may call an hour prior to the 11am Friday service at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home at Cobblestone Crossing, Elkhart with Dr. Mike Wills officiating. DAV #19 will render military honors at the funeral home.
