Retired Air Force colonel, John D. (Jack) Miles, age 83, passed away at his home at the Primrose Retirement Community in Mishawaka, Indiana on May 16, 2018.
Born and raised in New Jersey, Jack moved to Maryland where he became an Air Force officer after earning his degree from the University of Maryland. His distinguished 29 year military career included service as a USAF pilot, extensive travel and assignments that took him and his family to Delaware, Okinawa, Taiwan, Alabama, (where he obtained his M.S. from Auburn University), Washington D.C., Hawaii and Indiana. A Vietnam veteran, he retired from the Air Force after his final assignment at the University of Notre Dame where he served first as instructor of Aeronautical Studies and later as Assistant Dean of Engineering.
Throughout his life, and certainly well into his retirement, Jack loved woodworking, entertaining, and serving as president of the Primrose Retirement Community.
He is survived by his daughters, Beverly (Jeff) Gates, Patty (Mark) Deyermond, Joanne (Mike) Moody, and his son, David (Kris) Miles, seven grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild. Also survived by siblings Rita Kearney, Ann Miles and Michael Miles.
A remembrance service will be held on Saturday, May 19 at 3:00 pm at the Primrose Retirement Community in Mishawaka. Jack will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.
