Jules “Duke” Humbarger, 82, a life-long resident of Elkhart died September 11, 2010 of a broken heart.
He was born March 2, 1928 in Elkhart to Leona and Drew Humbarger and graduated from Elkhart High School. He married Pauline “Polly” Laughman January 22, 1949. Polly preceded him in death in March of 2010. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his two sons, Terry and Steven Humbarger, and his two brothers, Lester James and William Humbarger. Survivors include daughters Karen (Michael) Harmon of Niles, Deanna (Timothy) Lauer of Granger, daughters-in-law, Marilyn, Shirley and Jane, along with 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren and was anticipating the arrival of 2 great-grandchildren in 2011.
Duke and Polly were married for 61 years. Their years together was a love story. They worked together to establish a strong foundation of family values and created wonderful memories for all of their family and friends, especially for their children and grandchildren. He will be remembered for his never-ending love, devotion, and compassion while caring for Polly when she became ill.
His family and friends will remember his energy, enthusiasm for life, fun times and his knack for story-telling.
Duke had may hobbies and past-times including antique cars, golf, fishing, hunting, family vacations, relaxing at their lake home, and playing slots. Duke retired from CTS in 1990 after 38 years and was a former volunteer fireman for Concord Fire Dept., and was a member of the Model “A” Restorers Club of America.
Visitation will be from 10 am to 12 pm Tuesday at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home at Cobblestone Crossing, Elkhart where a celebration of life service will be at 12 pm. Burial will follow at West Goshen Cemetery.
