Louise A. Hawkins, 88, of Elkhart, passed away Saturday Aug. 24, 2013 at Elkhart General Hospital.
She was born October 25, 1924 in Indianapolis to Fin and Katie Mae (Wilson) Ax.
On April 30, 1946 in Indianapolis she married Carl B. Hawkins who preceded her in death on Nov. 4, 2010.
Surviving are 2 sons: Carl B. (Deborah) Hawkins of Niles, MI., and Robert D. Hawkins of Texas; a daughter: Elaine (Joseph) Fiwek of Elkhart, 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister Helen Meyer.
Louise graduated from Shortridge High School in Indianapolis, attended Radford University in Virginia where she received her Bachelors in Education degree. She retired from the welfare department as a supervisor for 10 years. Prior to that she worked as a secretary for the American Cancer Society for 5 years.
Louise was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, Embroidery Guild of America and American Association of University Women.
Visitation will be 10 to 11am Wednesday Aug. 24 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church where Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11am with Fr. Jason Freiburger officiating. Entombment will follow at Chapel of Memories, Rice Cemetery, Elkhart.
Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral and Cremation Center, Elkhart is entrusted with the arrangements.
Memorials for Louise may be made to American Lung Association, American Heart Association or Center for Hospice Care, Elkhart.
