Mary L. Hayes-Walters, 96 of Elkhart, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, Oct. 23, 2015 at Golden Living Care Facility.
Mary was born on Oct. 3, 1919 in Elkhart to the late William H. and Edna (Barfell) Huff.
Survivors include her children: Barbara (Beuford) Lee of Bristol, Elaine Garner of Elkhart, Steven R. (Marcie) Hayes of Elkhart, Ronald L. (Patricia) Hayes of Elkhart and Edwin M. (Suzanne) Hayes of Williamsport, MD; three nephews, Larry (Melissa) Kleitz, Dennis (Linda) Kleitz and Raymond (Karen) Kleitz; 2 nieces, Darline Bixby and Donna (Ben) Wheeler; 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her 2 daughters, Mary Lou Crook and Janet Sue Hayes, and sisters, Ruth Mansfield and Irene Landis and her brothers, Paul and Thomas Huff.
Mary was a graduate of Elkhart High School and the Inglewood School of Nursing in Chicago.
She worked as an RN for 16 years before taking on a full time position of raising her children. She later went to work for Hermaseal Co. where she retired after 19 years of service.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and attended bible study regularly She had a passion for reading, crocheting and genealogy.
A gathering of family and friends will be from 1-2 pm on Monday, Oct. 26th at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, where services will begin at 2 pm. Interment will be at Rice Cemetery at a later date.
