Mary E. Wetzel, 82, of Bristol, died November 24, 2010 at 4:15 am at her home after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) 13 months ago. She was born May 11, 1928 in Elkhart to Thomas and Wilma (Plank) Nihart. On June 14, 1953, she married Carl L. Wetzel, Jr. in Bristol.
She is survived by her husband, a daughter Marcia (Ted) Williams of Bristol; a son Brian Wetzel of Bristol; 3 grandchildren Charrell (Justin) Stevens of Goshen, Kimberly Williams of Bristol, and Allison (Brice) Hartman of Elkhart; 13 international exchange student grandchildren; and a brother Donald Nihart of Lake Worth, FL. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Lena Mae Dilley and brother T. Robert Nihart.
Mary graduated from Bristol High School is 1946 and attended Manchester College for a year. She worked at CTS Corp. and then retired from Goshen General Hospital after 23 years in the Radiology Dept. She was a member of the Bristol United Methodist Church and sang many solos in the choir. At various times she served as choir director for the children’s, girls and adult choirs. She was also a member of the Do Drop In Quilting Club at the church and a member of Curves in Bristol.
Friends may visit the family from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 Friday at Bristol United Methodist Church and 1 hour prior to the service Saturday at 11 am at the church. Rev. Fred Stayton will officiate. Burial will follow at Oakridge Cemetery in Bristol. Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home at Cobblestone Crossing, Elkhart is handling arrangements.
