Max C. Garl, 83, of Elkhart, passed away at 12:30 am, June 16, 2009 at Golden Living Center, Elkhart.
He was born January 15, 1926 in Elkhart to Clinton E. and Ruth (Cook) Garl and married E. Virginia Arnold on July 29, 1950 in Angola, IN. She died on May 17, 1989. Surviving are twin daughters, Karen Kay Grise and Kathy Rae (Robert) Burris both of Elkhart, a granddaughter, Laura (Tim) Parsons and a brother Thomas E. (Charolette) Garl all of Elkhart and 4 nephew and 2 nieces. An infant granddaughter, Cassandra Atchley preceded in death.
Mr. Garl was a civil engineer/land surveyor and owned Garl Land Surveying and later a partner in G&L Land Surveying Co. for 42 years prior to his retirement. He also was Assistant City Engineer under several administrations. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, former member of Elkhart Jaycees and a charter member of the Elkhart Evening Optimist Club where he was in charge of the Crouch-Freed award. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose #599 Elkhart, American Legion #143, Bristol, DAV # 19, Elkhart. He was a graduate of Elkhart High School and earned his B.S. degree from Tri-State College in Civil Engineering. He served in the U.S. Army. He belonged to a Dance Club and Diner’s Club in earlier years. He had an extensive collection of Viking Era items that were displayed at the Mishawaka Public Library and featured in the South Bend Tribune. He also enjoyed playing cards, doing crossword puzzles, and his dog Cody.
Friends may call from 2-4 & 6-8 pm Friday at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, 1531 Cobblestone Blvd. Elkhart and a half hour prior to the 10 am service on Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church, 831 W. Marion St. Elkhart. Reverend Tim Diemer will officiate. Burial will follow at Rice Cemetery with the U.S. Army Honor Guard and the DAV# 19 rendering military graveside honors.
