Miriam H. Hughes, 94, of Elkhart, died October 14, 2010 at home. She was born September 3, 1916 in Wakarusa to the late Don and Treva (Myers) Smeltzer. On April 27, 1949 in Elkhart, she married Eugene F. Hughes. He preceded her in death on December 28, 1987.

She is survived by a daughter Jeannine (Richard) Horvath of New Carlisle; 2 grandsons Philip Horvath of Cottontown, TN, and Joel (Erica) Horvath of New Carlisle; great-grandchildren Bradley and Jaden Horvath; 2 brothers Paul (Joan) Smeltzer of Elkhart, and Dean (Marjorie) Smeltzer of Brewster, MA; sister-in-law Margaret “Sunny” Hughes of Elkhart; and 7 nieces and 3 nephews.

Miriam was a bookkeeper and her husband was an accountant. Together they were self-employed, handling several small business accounts. She was a lifetime member of Elks Lodge 425 and remained active in the Lady Elks. She volunteered as a “Pink Coat” and in the gift shop at Elkhart General Hospital, and made heart pillows for the hospital. She was an avid golfer and bridge player, and a longstanding member of Elkhart’s First United Methodist Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Friends may visit the family from 2 to 6 pm Sunday at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home at Cobblestone Crossing, Elkhart where services will be held Monday at 10 am. Rev. Don Reed of the First United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will follow at Rice Cemetery.
