Norman F. Roll, Sr., 70, of Granger, died Monday, October 5, 2009 at home. He was born on September 20, 1939 in Elkhart to Robert and Bessie May (Kegerreis) Herrli. After his parents early deaths, he was adopted by Francis and Florence Roll who also preceded him in death. On March 21, 2003 he married Nila Johnson McGillem in Mishawaka.
She survives along with a son, Norm (Angie) Roll, Jr. of Elkhart; a daughter, Karen (Rick) Knauss of Granger; a stepson Michael McGillem of Anchorage, Alaska; a stepdaughter Laura (Tom) Buti of Niles, Michigan; 10 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers Jack Herrli and Kenny (Ellen) Herrli of Goshen; 2 sisters Colleen (Norman) Allman of Onalaska, Texas, and Norma Jean Wingo of Indianapolis. He was preceded in death by a sister Ina Mae Traver, and a great-grandson Brenton Joe Mast.
Mr. Roll owned Ash Road Self Storage, was a life member of F.O.E. #395 and the Loyal Order of Moose #599, American Legion #143 of Bristol, and Four Lakes Country Club. He was a graduate of Elkhart High School’s Class of ’57. He was an avid golfer, fisherman, and loved being with his family and his beloved dog, Duke.
Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 pm Friday at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, 1531 Cobblestone Blvd., Elkhart, ending with special music and a prayer by Rev. Brian Lutz. Cremation will follow.
