Philip Heckaman Huff age 86, passed away quietly on February 24th after a brief illness. Phil was born January 18, 1933 on a farm south and west of Nappanee to Marvin Philip Huff and Marie Anglin Huff. He was a 1951 graduate of Nappanee High School.
Phil entered the Navy in 1951 and spent time in the Pacific aboard SS Gregory where he specialized in communications. It was here that he met his wife of over 50 years Geraldine Lamontagne Huff. The experiences during service to his country were often the topic of conversation. Pictures of the handsome young seaman and his striking wife could be found scattered around his home. Phil and Gerry were devoted to their 3 sons: Scott Huff (deceased), Mike Huff of Elkhart, and Brad Huff of South Bend.
After a brief stint of farming, Phil worked 35 years at GTE as a cable splicer, He was an outdoors man and enjoyed fishing at his getaway in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
He and Gerry also enjoyed live shows, both music and theater. Phil loved to watch westerns and was a devoted baseball fan. He enjoyed tinkering around his house and yard.
Phil attended St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church in Elkhart, IN and supported a variety of charitable organizations. He was greatly admired by his family for his generosity, loyalty, and willingness to persevere through life's challenges.
Phil was proceeded in death by his wife Gerry and son Scott. Also 3 sisters: Lou Renwick, Marilyn Schori and Janice Robinson. He is survived by sons Mike and Brad, and his sister Helen Miller (Bob) Strang. Also surviving are his nieces and nephews, Susie (Jim) Lamb, Dennis (Lorna) Schori, Roger (Kandy) Schori, John Schori, Cindi (Harold) Umbaugh, Steve (Gloria) Miller, Debbie (Roy) Burkholder, Teri Robinson, Patt (Mike, Phil’s special friend) Schaefer and Kathy Barr.
Friends may visit with family from 9am to 11am on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, 1531 Cobblestone Blvd, Elkhart. Funeral services will be at 11am with Rev. Matthew Coonan officiating. He will be buried at a later date at Bremen Cemetery.
