On June 26, 1948, he married Doris Marie Schrader in Elkhart. She preceded him in death May 7, 2007. Surviving is his daughter Diana (Dennis) Eash of Indianapolis; sons James (Susan) Holdread of North Webster and Thomas (Angela) Holdread of Elkhart; 6 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.
Dick worked as a buffer in the musical instrument industry. At age 16, he began working for Martin Band, then C.G. Conn and Vincent Bach. He proudly retired from Vincent Bach in 1991. He faithfully cared for Doris for the rest of her life after she was diagnosed with M.S. He had quite a hobby collecting old silver and brass, and refinishing the pieces until they shined brighter than a star. He was an avid fly fisherman, tying his own flies, was king of the euchre club at Brentwood, and was a Cubs and Bears fan. He was also an animal lover.
