Richard “Rick” Michael Butterfield, age 74, of Bristol, Indiana passed away on Wednesday, March 3, 2021 at his home surrounded by his family. Rick was born on February 13, 1947 in Indianapolis to Albert A. and Mary L. Butterfield. He married Kathryn D. Tipton on July 29, 1981 in Indianapolis.
Rick attended the University of Southern California. A Vietnam veteran, Rick honorably served as a helicopter door gunner in the United States Marine Corps. He never spoke much about his time in Vietnam, but he was very proud to be a U. S. Marine. As a licensed pilot, Rick enjoyed flying, videography, photography, was an electronic enthusiast, and had a love for his animals. Rick had a passion for everything he did in life, but above all he loved his family.
Rick is survived by his wife of 39 years, Kathy; children, Richard Michael II (Beverly) Butterfield of Indianapolis, Scott Allen (Laura) Butterfield of Indianapolis and Christopher D. Butterfield of Indianapolis, Jennifer (Mark) Davis of Texas and Kristina L. Butler of Michigan; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; his siblings, Patti Traut of Indianapolis, Albert “Sonny” Butterfield of Greenwood, IN. and Dennis (Carol) Butterfield of Princess Lake, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Military honors will be on Thursday March 11, 2021 at 1 pm at Fort Custer National Cemetery, 15501 Dickman Road, Augusta, MI 49012. Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, 1531 Cobblestone Blvd., Elkhart, IN 46514 is assisting the Butterfield family.
