Robert L. Johnson

Robert L. Johnson passed away Sunday morning, August 7 at Elkhart Hospice House.

Robert was born in Hayti, Missouri to the late O.Z. & Mattie Johnson. His older brother Johnny Johnson’s last known address was Los Angeles, CA.

Robert never married nor had children but he was always liked by people who came to know him. He just had a broad smile that captured other’s hearts.

Despite his deaf/muteness and Cerebral Palsy since childhood, Robert persevered and lived independently until a fall in 1995 when he was placed at Golden Living Center. In his younger healthier days, Robert enjoyed gardening, fishing and riding his tricycle about the town. Then recently, he could be seen safely weaving his electric wheelchair about the nursing home.

Those left to cherish his memory, are his many caregivers at Golden Living Center where he lived 21 years and his friend and advocate of 32 years, Tim Lockhart and his wife Karen.

A special thanks to the recent compassionate medical attention by EGH 4th floor Intermediate Care nurses and doctors. And finally gratitude to Hospice House staff for providing Robert comfort care the last two weeks of his life, where he died peacefully and with dignity.

A graveside service will be held at 10am Saturday, August 13th in Frame Cemetery, CR 113, Dunlap, IN. Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements. Memorials may be directed to Elkhart Hospice House.
