Robert Stevens Snyder, 89, of 1801 Greencroft Blvd. Goshen, formerly of Bristol, Indiana, died at 8 pm Friday, June 5, 2009 at his residence.
He was born June 3, 1920 in Elkhart to Ervan Bert and Margaret (Stevens) Snyder and married Doris E. Bertch on August 7, 1943 in Greenville, NC. She survives with 2 daughters, Tamra (David) Redden of Noblesville, IN and Debra (Randy) Whisenant of Dennison, TX; 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Beulah Roeder and a brother, Barney Snyder.
Mr. Snyder retired as a rural mail carrier for the Bristol Post Office for 25 years and later worked as a courier for First National Bank in Bristol for 10 years. He was a member of the Bristol United Methodist Church, and was past commander for the American Legion #143, Bristol. He was the Washington Township Trustee for 2 terms, leader of the Bristol Explorer Scouts, and a volunteer for the Bristol Fire Dept. for many years. He also was a member of the Bristol Library Board. He enjoyed golf, sailing, fishing and being with his children and grandchildren. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, field artillery as a corporal in World War II.
Friends may call from 3-7 pm Monday at the Bristol United Methodist Church, 201 S. Division, Bristol. Graveside services will be at 10:30 am, Tuesday at Zion Cemetery, Bristol. Reverend Fred Stayton will officiate.
