Rose Areta McGinnis, 93, of Elkhart died July 6, 2009 at 7:30 pm at her home.
She was born on June 28, 1916 in White Cloud, Michigan to Joseph I. and Eva (Stevens) Areta. She married Joseph J. Maier in 1934 in Mishawaka. He died on December 30, 1979. She is survived by three daughters, Sandra McGregor of South Bend, Joan Young of Elkhart, and Alice E. (Steve) Poseley of Elkhart, along with 4 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by one sister, Veola “Vi” Lung, a brother Robert Areta, and a granddaughter Amy J. Miller.
Mrs. McGinnis worked as a secretary for various local businesses and then was a sorter for the US Postal Service for 20 years. She retired as a homemaker. She was an advocate of recycling long before it was popular. She enjoyed politics and organic gardening. She graduated from Mishawaka High School and also attended the College of Commerce in South Bend.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 pm Saturday at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, 1531 Cobblestone Blvd., Elkhart. Cremation has taken place.
