Verba J. Prough, 95, of Goshen, passed away Wednesday October 30, 2024 at Goshen Hospital with her family by her side. She was born September 10, 1929 in Milford, IN to John S. and Ada J. Yoder. On April 23, 1954 in Goshen she married Russel “Lee” Prough who preceded her in death on October 30, 2016.
Verba worked in the food service in the Elkhart School System for many years. She worked as the Dietary Manager for Hubbard Hill Estates for 18 years. After retirement she worked in food service parttime in the Penn Harris Madison School System for over 6 years. Verba was a volunteer at Suzanna’s Kitchen, where she helped to prepare and serve food too the least fortunate. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church where she was very active, serving as an usher, working on the Peanut Brittle fundraiser, helped with funeral dinners and was a member of Esther Circle. Verba enjoyed stamping, painting, gardening and traveling. She enjoyed collecting shells while in Florida and making crafts with her sisters. Most importantly she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Surviving are her children, Melody (Ted) Knudson, Mark (Stephanie Farnham) Prough and Kirk (Lisa Swartzell) Prough all of Elkhart, grandson Tyler Knudson of Elkhart, IN., sisters, Ida (Ray) Yoder of Bristol, IN., Mattie Nissley of Goshen, IN and Linda (Bert) Troyer of Elkhart, Betty (Jonas) Troyer of North Canton, OH, Mary Ann Smith of Montgomery, IN., Laura Myers of Goshen, IN., and sister-in-law Eunice Yoder of Kolona, IA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lee, son Michael Lee Prough, brothers Otis Yoder and Roman Yoder, sister Gertrude Brandenburg, brother-in-laws Mel Nissley, Bill Brandenburg, Reuel Smith, and Al Myers.
Visitation will be from 4-8 pm on Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, 1531 Cobblestone Blvd., Elkhart, IN 46514. Visitation will be from 9:30am -10:30am on Thursday, November 7, 2024 at Faith United Methodist Church, 22045 CR 18, Goshen, IN 46528 where funeral service will be at 10:30am. Pastor John Hogsett will officiate. Burial will be next to her husband Lee at Shore Cemetery, Shipshewana, IN. following the service.
