Virginia M. Ister

July 28, 1922 — March 18, 2016

Virginia (Ginnie) Maxine Ister passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 17, 2016. She was born the youngest of nine children to Icyvilla and Ulysses Grant Young (both deceased) July 28, 1922 and was raised in Neoga, IL.

She moved to Elkhart, IN with her sisters (Ruby Checkley and Mary Jane Young, both deceased) in the mid-1940s. She worked over 30 years at Checkley’s Michigan Street Grocery and retired in 1978. She married Charles Ister (deceased 1987) in 1947.
She is survived by her daughter, Jane Kaufmann Kriekard (John); granddaughter, Erin (Anthony) Kosec, and great grandchildren, Nora and Charles Kosec, all of Scottsdale, AZ.

Virginia was also close to her nephews: Mark, Keith, Paul, Jim, Carl and David Shinabarger. Virginia wintered in AZ and moved permanently from Elkhart to Scottsdale in October of 2008.
Virginia will always be remembered as a friendly, generous, fun-loving lady and as a second “mom” to many of Jane’s friends! She was a member of the Elkhart Valley Church of the Brethren and life member of the Elkhart Moose Lodge.

A memorial service will be held in Elkhart on Saturday, May 14 at 10 o’clock at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home.
