Wanda L. (Powers) Conway

Wanda L. Conway, of Elkhart, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2019 at the Elkhart Hospice House.

She was born Aug. 25, 1936 in Cannelton, Indiana to Archie E. and Mabel E. (Hobbs) Powers. She married William G. Conway Sr. on Aug. 31, 1968 in Elkhart. He preceded her in death on Aug. 11, 2011. Surviving are a daughter, Wilma (Dale) McDougle of Elkhart and 3 sons, Carlton Conway, Virgil Storm and Archie (Gina) Storm all of Elkhart; stepson, William G. Conway Jr. of Elkhart and stepdaughter Joyce L. Conway of Wheat Ridge, Colorado; 10 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren; sister, Rosemary (Jerry) Moyes of Jeffersonville, Indiana and brother, Earl Powers of Newburg, Indiana. She was preceded in death by a brother Jerry Powers and a sister, Beverly Bowling.

Family was Wanda’s number one priority. She loved cooking for and spending time with her family. Her recipe for Potato Salad was requested often, giving her a sense of pride. She had a knack of fine dicing the potatoes like no one else. Even those that didn’t care for potato salad, loved her recipe.

Until Wanda’s health declined, she rarely missed her children and then grandchildren’s athletic events. She was by far their biggest fan often bring treats for a job well done. She loved to watch Notre Dame football and The Kardashians, as well as shopping.

Wanda attended the Indiana School for the Deaf in Indianapolis as a young child, which was several hours from home. She missed her family terribly when she was there and would have preferred to be on the farm with her siblings. After school, she worked as a production worker for the Kent Company for 23 years. She was a long-time member of the Michiana Deaf Club.

A Gathering of family and friends will be from 10 am to 12 pm Saturday, Aug. 17th at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home. Private family burial will be at Rice Cemetery at a later date.
