Wayne E. “Jack” Campbell 92, of Bristol, passed to his eternal life at 9:51am March 28, 2012 at Elkhart General Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He fought the good fight, He finished the race, He kept the faith.
He was born Nov. 30, 1919 in Wilshire, OH to Milo W. and Lela (Massey) Campbell and married Marie E. Chomer on June 25, 1941 in Elkhart. She preceded him in death on May 4, 2007. Surviving are his children Wayne E. “Bud” (Carol) Campbell of Bradenton, FL; Carol (Arnold) Cly of LaFountain, IN; Janet Beadle of Middlebury; Joan (Ted) Buchanan of Bristol; Jackie (Brian) Lakey of Goshen; and John J. (Tammy) Campbell of Bristol; 19 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 2 brothers, Billie (Jackie) Campbell and Dean Campbell both of Elkhart. 3 brothers, Virgil, Dale, and Ernest Campbell and 3 sisters, Opal Sigur, Genevieve Durinski and Edith Schiltz all preceded him in death.
As a youth, Jack was a Golden Gloves champion in amateur boxing. He graduated from Elkhart High School in 1940 and was a retired police officer for the City of Elkhart from 1945-1965. He then worked for the City of Elkhart as its first Health Inspector for the Building Dept. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church, Bristol, the Knights of Columbus and F.O.P # 52, Elkhart.
Visitation will be Friday from 2-4 & 6-8 pm at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, Elkhart where a time of sharing and remembrance will be at 7 pm followed by the Rosary at 8 pm. Visitation will also be a half hour prior to the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Bristol. Fr. Bob VanKempen will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Vincent’s Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to St. Mary’s Church.
