William A. Swartout, Jr., 68, of Elkhart passed away Thursday, Aug. 29 at Elkhart General Hospital.
He was born Oct. 17, 1944 in Cheboygan, MI. to William A. and Mary M. (Massey) Swartout, Sr. On August 8, 1970 in Goshen he married Mary (Mimi) Morrison who survives along with a daughter Susan (Matt) Miller of Goshen; a son Chris (Romy) Swartout of Elkhart and 4 grandchildren: Taylor and Kaitie Miller and Griffin and Kendal Swartout. He was preceded in death by his brother Robert Swartout.
William graduated from Pellston High School, Pellston, MI. and Ivy Tech College, Magna Cum Laude. He served in the US Navy from 1966 to 1969. He worked at Johnson Controls in maintenance and retired from Concord Community Schools after 18 years as a computer technician.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church. He enjoyed woodcarving, golf and was an amateur photographer, but his main joy was attending his grandchildren’s activities. He was an avid Michigan fan and loved his dog, Brady.
Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8pm Sunday at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral and Cremation Center, Elkhart where a vigil service will be held at 7:30 pm.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11am Monday Sept. 2 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Fr. Matthew Coonan officiating. Burial will be at Oakridge Cemetery, Goshen at a later date.
Memorials may be made to St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church.
